Nicaragua’s location

Nicaragua borders both the North Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea with Costa Rica in the south and Honduras in the north. Nicaragua covers 57,143 square miles including the region’s largest freshwater lakes; Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua.

Lake Managua, Lago de Managua, is a lake in western Nicaragua in a valley with an elevation of 128 feet above sea level. Also known as Xolotlán, the lake has numerous streams rising in the central highlands and the Diriamba Highlands. It is drained by the Tipitapa River, which flows into Lake Nicaragua.

Lake Nicaragua is a freshwater lake and is the second biggest lake in Central America. The lake drains to the Caribbean Sea via the San Juan River, historically making the lakeside city of Granada an Atlantic port, although Granada is closer to the Pacific Ocean geographically. The Pacific is near enough to be seen from the mountains of Ometepe, a volcanic island on the lake.

The country has three geographic sections: the dry Pacific coastal plain, the wetter mountainous extension of the Central American Highlands and the humid Atlantic lowlands. The dry Pacific coastal plain has low mountain ranges near the sea. The wetter and also cooler mountainous extension of the highlands goes from the northwest to the southeast across the middle of the country. The humid, hot and flat Atlantic lowlands along the east coast.

Nica Time (zone)

The Nica Time zone is Central Standard Time. CST has the offset of GMT -6 which means that the time in Nicaragua is 6 hours behind UTC / GMT. It is the standard time they observe in Nicaragua.

There’s no daylight saving time and the country observes Central Standard Time all year round. If you compare it to the timezone in Europe, there’s a difference around 8 hours behind. The time zone identifier for Nicaragua is the city Managua in America.

For example, in September, it’s Friday 5.pm when it’s Saturday 1.am in France.

Sunrises and sunsets

The hours of the sunrise and sunset change slightly almost every day and they are depending on two things: the Earth’s orbit around the Sun is elliptical and the Earth’s axis of rotation is not perpendicular to the plane of the orbit. They both contribute to the changes in the uneven times for sunrise and sunset.

As you noticed, the Sun rises only a little earlier each day and sets noticeably later each day. For example, on the first of January there’s a Nicaraguan sunrise at 04:50 and a sunset at 18:47. On the first of July, half a year later, there’s a sunrise at 04:05 and a sunset at 19:30.

Times for sunrise and sunset in Nicaragua won’t change that much over the year because of its proximity to the equator. During summer the sun moves slightly to the north and in winter slightly back to south. But there’s not much change in the distance.

Tropical climate

Nicaragua’s climate is tropical but it also varies with altitude and season. One thing is sure, it’s hot all year round.

They have the dry season and the wet season. The dry season or the summer is from November to April. It’s very hot and dry with cooler nights and less warm sea water. The wet, rainy season or the winter is from May until October. It’s humid with sometimes heavy tropical daily rains.

Overall, it’s always nica time. Every season has its pros and cons and the country will always have something to offer. You can always contact our surf lodge if you have questions about a certain topic. We’re always happy to help you and give you some more information about the beautiful country.
